Primary Healthcare Needs Top Priority

For decades, the Government has grappled with India’s healthcare shortcomings by introducing various programs. Despite some measure of success, the overarching problem of universal healthcare access continues to fester like a recalcitrant sore. While there are several reasons for the lack of consummate success in improving healthcare access, the overall problem may lie in the pursuit of improper priorities. To address access issues head-on, radically improving primary healthcare in India should be top priority.

Aamir is right – Low-cost Generics could reduce India’s disease burden

Actor Aamir Khan recently appeared before the Parliamentary panel examining FDI in pharmaceuticals and pitched for low-cost generic medicines, contending that the issue was how the poor could get cheap medicines. I believe Aamir’s comments on the importance of access to generic medicines highlight numerous critically important issues related to meeting India’s unmet health needs. Particularly for the hundreds of millions living below the poverty line, low-cost generics could play a crucial role in reducing the burden of disease.

This paper highlights the broad policy issues afflicting the health insurance sector, taking into account the views of all industry stakeholders — patients, physicians, insurance service providers, hospitals, as well as Government and regulatory representatives.
